How to Make a Table Runner Abstract Art with Tie and Dye

Tie and Dye comes in many forms, from spiral art to lightning. By a simple technique of combining color dye with water and finding the right position to pour it, you can create abstract art without even trying.

Tie and dye is a form of abstract art that uses the technique of twisting and folding of fabric until it is rolled in itself.

Instead of painting abstract art on a table cloth or runner, you can simply use dye to express your inner chaos with mixed hues and mismatched patterns.

1.      For this DIY, you don’t need to use a new table runner to create art. It is true that for an artist anything can be a canvas. It is all in the mind to be imaginative and creative.

Use an old plain table runner or just cut a tablecloth into a runner and hem the edges.

Run the fabric under water, no need to give it a complete wash to get better results. You will need to wash it afterward anyway.

2.      You will need elastic bands, bottles, fabric dyes, and rings to keep the fabric bunched together. Gather all you will need first then move to the actual process. Every type of tie and dye required a different tying technique of the fabric. So first decide how you want the Abstract Art to turn out.

3.      If you plan on making a mixed art then turn and fold the textile and hold it in place with elastics and clips. There will be no need for an abstract art painting that requires paint; here the paint will be the dyes themselves.

4.      Follow the instruction on the box of the fabric dyes and prepare bottles for each color.

Once you are done, select one color at a time, and after calculated guess start pouring the color dye on the fabric.

A plus point about Abstract Art is that even if you make a mistake while painting or in this case color dying fabric, it is never a mistake but a step of the artist.

5.      After the process is complete, now rinse the fabric off under cold water and then wash it in the washer with a gentle detergent to remove any leftover chemicals or color.

6.      Dry the table runner with your artwork in the open air and iron it to smooth out the fabric.

Once the fabric is smooth you can now lay it on the table and decorate the tabletop by placing candle stands and glassware on top of the table runner.

You can also add beads or embellishments to the borders of the runner to add character to the fabric and space. Light the candles and enjoy the flickering lights over your abstract artwork on the table.
