DIY Paint an Abstract Art on your Cushion Cover

Cushions are known for making your space brighten up especially when they are in bright hues. Have you ever thought if abstract art can be made on just about anything then what about the cushions in your living room?

Art is all about thinking outside the box. Abstract Art can be made on just about anything, be it a canvas, a mirror, a piece of wood, and even on a fabric

Painting on a cushion is a unique way of making them stand out. It’s also something that you can arrange as a family activity these summer holidays.

If you want to paint your cushions covers but want to add a twist then why not make an abstract art painting on them? Follow the steps below and add that extra splash of color to your space!

1.      Start by fixing your cushion cover on a canvas or you can also use an embroidery hoop frame for extra tightness. Make sure the cover is of a lighter shade to accommodate the colors you will be using. Although you can use a black cover if what you plan to paint has a black background as well.

The first step to an abstract art painting would be applying a generous amount of matte gel to the fabric. It will act as a natural base and reflect a nice subtle shade from underneath. Let it rest and completely dry.

2.      Gather the shades of acrylic paints you plan on using, and join the kids in the activity from here. You can give each of the kids a paintbrush and a cushion to paint on; don’t worry about them ruining the cushions. The fun part of Abstract Painting is every shape and stroke has a meaning.

3.      Make strokes and shapes that you feel like expressing on the cushion surface. If you want a smudged impression in your art then you can use a piece of foam. Take some paint on the foam from the paint plate and smudge it around your artwork. It is up to you to paint the art however you feel like it.

It could be geometric shapes or mismatched strokes. For geometric shapes, you can use the tape technique to make the lines straight. Apply tape in a criss-cross manner and paint the spaces in between with the colors of your choice.

After that dries you can now remove the tapes and if you want add a different color of paint where the tape was. You may also use different cut-outs to create shapes.

4.      Try to keep the art clear and don’t let it get too muddy. After you are done painting, let the artwork dry.

Once it dries apply another generous layer of matte gel over the surface of the painting and let it set. Once the whole process is complete you can now use the covers on your cushions.
