Easy Steps to Paint Your First Abstract Art

Abstract Art looks easier than it is, in reality, it can be a lot more complicated than most traditional artworks. We have all heard at least once the words that ‘I could easily make that too’. Well, it is not an impossible task, and you actually can do it. The first step to do anything is to believe in yourself. Be expressive and be daring, that's what abstract is all about.

The tricky part of an abstract painting is that it goes against all the conventional ways of producing an art piece. But you have to start somewhere right! Follow the step-by-step process of painting your very own artwork.

Start with something basic, all you will need are paints, a canvas, and tape.

1.      For a canvas, get a readymade one from any craft store in any size.

2.       Decide on if you want to want to work with oil paints or acrylic paints, acrylics dry much sooner than the other paints and are hence much easier to work over. For this project opt for acrylics if you want to it to be a quick project, otherwise, with oil paints, patience is the key.

3.      If you’re confused about which colors suit well together you can get a color wheel, choose your brushes. As a beginner choose to use smaller brushes so that you can easily handle using them for the finer lining.

4.      After understanding the color harmonies from the color wheel, decide on which hues you want to paint with. For this project you will need two or three shades of color for the whole artwork, make sure they are different hues of a single color.

5.      If you want texture in your painting, use artist quality gesso to create texture to paint over, spread the gel around with a palette knife.

6.      Now using a printer’s tape draw geometrical shapes on the canvas, stick tape in a crisscross pattern to form shapes.

7.      If you don’t want any paint seeping in the tape gaps you can use a ruler.

8.      On a plate, mix the colors you want to paint with. You can also directly mix them on the canvas but it all depends on how much control you want on your final color result.

9.      After the paint has dried, remove the tapes and fill the gaps with another color, either darker or lighter than the one you used before.

10.  You don’t need to paint all the shapes; you can leave some spaces as well. It all depends on the final look you are going for.

11.  Let the painting dry and settle, your artwork is complete. Now you can frame and hang it anywhere you want.
